The lived experiences of females using online self-harm support sites: An interpretative phenomenological Analysis. (posted 2.23.10)
PARTICIPANT INFORMATION SHEET
My name is Levita D’souza and I am conducting a research project on the experience of self-harming, as part of a Doctor of Counselling Psychology degree at La Trobe University, Australia. My research supervisor is Professor Margot Schofield.
I am wanting to talk online with women above the age of 18 who have self-harmed in the past but are no longer self-harming. To take part, you must have been registered with self-injury.com for one to three years and are currently engaged in conversation with others through message posts. I am very interested to learn about your experience of using this support site and forming social circles.
If you choose to participate in this research, I will arrange an online interview with you at a time that is most convenient for you. The interview will take approximately one to two hours. You will be asked questions regarding your experiences of self-injury and any treatment or therapy you may have had. The study is particularly interested in your experience of making and posting videos and reading and responding to online posts.
Should you feel distressed during our talk, we will stop the interview until you feel better, or you can stop it all together. If you should feel distressed after our interview, you can contact an online counselling service such as: Lifeline: www.lifeline.com.au . Phone: 131114.
Lifeline provides a nation wide (Australia) 24 hour telephone counselling service for the cost of a local call if ringing within Australia, as well as face-to-face counselling. Lifeline’s website provides information and contact about relevant services, recommended books and self-help informational kits.
The following are websites that can be accessed by anyone in any country.
SAFE (Self Abuse Finally Ends) Alternatives Program : www.selfinjury.com
The Self Injury Foundation (www.selfinjuryfoundation.org)
National self-harm network: www.nshn.co.uk is designed to support and empower people who self-harm, to provide information, and demystify common misconceptions about self-harm.
If you are living in the US, you can also contact 800-273-TALK (8255) www.nmha.org, 800-SUICIDE (784-2433) or 800-334-HELP (4357). These services are available 24 hours.
Alternately you can contact your doctor, a telephone counselling service in your country (such as Lifeline in Australia on Ph: 131114, or access selfinjury.com if you are located in a different country), or you can also contact me on the email address provided below, for alternative referral details.
You may find it interesting or helpful to talk about your experiences in the interview, but I will not be able to provide personal counselling or other forms of ongoing support. Your personal stories may enable us to better understand the experiences and needs of people who self-harm and use online support sites, and raise awareness and improve services designed to help people who self-harm.
You can choose to withdraw from the study at any time up to four weeks after our interview. If you choose this option, no penalties apply and all the information you provide will be discarded. Your privacy and confidentiality will be assured.
Once the study is completed the information will be preserved for a specified period of 5 years in accordance with the La Trobe University guidelines, and then destroyed. RESEARCH ON SELF HARM WEBSITES:
Hi everyone, my name is Yasmine Dabbs and I am a trainee clinical psychologist.
As part of my 3rd year thesis I am conducting a study which is looking into self-harm websites.
I wanted to research from YOUR perspective, what you think are the possible positive, neutral, or negative effects that using self-harm websites might have on individuals who self-harm. I am also interested in finding out what type of professional help people who self-harm would like to have in the future, whether this be in the form of internet counselling, internet support groups, or face-to-face / group support or therapy that is not-internet based.
In order to find out this information, I need volunteers to complete my questionnaire.
It will take around 10-15 minutes and is totally confidential. It has also been approved by
University of Hertfordshire ethics, UK. If you would like to take part in my study, please click
on this link to the questionnaire: http://www.psy.herts.ac.uk/self/ .
Many thanks for any help you can provide with this.
Kind regards, Yasmine.
